Storyline:
An examination of the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America's mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands - Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church, but a national movement.

Americanism

I went with some hesitation, thinking that the film relied on mockery of religion and of Christmas in order to get some of its laughs - but it turns out that Rev Billy is on a sincere mission, with a real church - and the film is in no way offensive to believers, nor is it preachy to non-believers or agnositcs - and the film is clearly out there defending the true meaning of the holidays in a noble way. WWJB is truthful, daring, inspiring, weird, and totally hilarious - with very important messages that the entire family, of all ages, can enjoy and greatly benefit from.

I saw this a few weeks ago at the San Francisco Doc Festival. It's a well done, topical movie that many of us NEED to see. With consumer debt at an all time high, the subprime mortgage crisis driving the dollar down, a dose of Rev Billy is what America needs. Go see this.....and bring the kids.

Rev. Billy' s artistic genius is brilliantly unsurpassed and he doesn't fail to amuse and enlighten in this film. Teaming up with producer Morgan Spurlock was no mistake either. As a long-time fan and advocate of Bill Talen's messages I didn't miss this movie, but he did not fail to make me change my ways even more. What Would Jesus Buy? is a definate must-see for everyone.
